Making a Statement: Designer Kirsten Grove’s Timeless Soapstone Fireplace
For designer Kirsten Grove, creating spaces that tell a story isn’t just a profession – it’s a calling that began in childhood and has evolved into an impressive career that includes co-founding We Three Design studio and being the creative force behind the popular online design resource Simply Grove. But it’s a very personal project, a stunning ALBERENE SOAPSTONETM fireplace in her home, that’s causing the biggest stir among her clients and followers.
A Vision of Modern Simplicity
“I wanted the fireplace to be very present,” Grove explains. “When you walk in, it’s the first thing you see. So I wanted something that felt a little bit chunkier, a little bit more streamlined and modern, because I knew there were going to be so many traditional, classic elements in the space. So I wanted the fireplace to kind of ground the space.”
The centerpiece of her living room isn’t just another pretty feature – it’s a masterclass in combining form and function. Using Alberene Soapstone, Grove created a fireplace that serves as both a stunning focal point and a practical heating element.
The Art of Installation
What sets this fireplace apart is its innovative single-slab design. “I call it a picture frame fireplace,” Grove shares. “Actually, for installers, it’s a pretty easy install. You just attach the slab, and then you cut pieces—the picture frame and the back wall slab. So it’s simple, but it looks complex.”
While many stone fireplaces require multiple pieces joined together with visible seams, Grove’s design achieves a seamless look using a single slab with a built-up border that adds depth and dimension. This architectural detail creates a modern profile that feels both bold and understated.
Why Soapstone for Fireplaces?
Alberene Soapstone isn’t just chosen for its looks. This American-quarried stone offers several advantages that make it ideal for fireplace surrounds:
- Non-porous surface resists staining and etching
- Superior heat resistance prevents cracking or damage
- Natural thermal properties help retain and radiate heat
- Dense composition ensures durability
- Low maintenance requirements mean easy care
- Develops a natural patina over time that adds character
Sustainability in Stone
For Grove, environmental responsibility is as important as aesthetics. “When we sent the picture to the installer, we kind of went back and forth on the process,” she notes. “They were able to not have any wasted product in the process of installing the fireplace, which was really important to me.”
This commitment to sustainability extends throughout her projects: “In my kitchen renovation project, we were able to use all three slabs, and we only had a little bit of waste left that we were able to gift to a friend for a side table.”
Modern Innovation Meets Traditional Appeal
While maintaining a classic appearance, the fireplace incorporates modern conveniences without compromising its aesthetic integrity. “I really wanted gas, but I didn’t want it to look like gas,” Grove reveals. “We actually kept the original brick insert and then framed the stone around it, and then we painted that the brick black with a fireproof paint, and we placed the gas logs in without adding glass or anything to give it that natural look like it could be a wood burning fireplace.”
Creating a Foundation for Design
The soapstone’s subtle character was an intentional choice. “I just remember having the conversation about wanting it to be pretty muted, where the eye goes more towards the shape,” she explains. ” I didn’t want the stone to distract from the design of the fireplace. So I feel like the slab that they picked for me was perfect.”
This thoughtful approach allows the fireplace to serve as a foundation for other design elements. “I love, love art. I have art all over my house. I try and collect it everywhere I go,” she shares. “And I knew also that the fireplace would act as kind of a foundation for it. If I did do a gallery wall, it wouldn’t be fighting against those pieces of art.”
The Art of Mixing Old and New
Grove’s design philosophy centers on creating unexpected harmonies. “I just love mixing old and new,” she reflects, “It’s fun and quirky, and it relaxes a space.”
A Design That Inspires
The fireplace has become so iconic that it’s now one of her most requested designs. “I have a lot of clients who when they get to the fireplace portion of their house design say, ‘Let’s just do what you did,'” Grove laughs. One client was particularly adamant: “I said, ‘We can do something unique in your house.’ And she replied, ‘I just want your fireplace.'”
Grove understands the sentiment: “If we ever move, I’m taking the fireplace with me,” she says with a laugh.
A Lasting Investment
Grove’s enthusiasm for natural stone is evident in every project she tackles. “Natural stone will always be my jam,” she declares. “I’ve worked with Polycor on our last two homes and they never fail us. Whether it’s marble or soapstone, I’m always taken aback by the beauty of their slabs.”
Her soapstone fireplace reflects a thoughtful design that bridges the gap between modern and traditional, creating a timeless focal point that will be admired – and appropriated – for years to come. It proves that when it comes to natural stone, investing in quality materials and thoughtful design creates spaces that truly stand the test of time.
